MAJA BLANCA CAKE

Maja Blanca Cake Tart Good morning everyone( or evening depending under what palm tree you are reading this post) and Happy Birthday! Who's birthday? Depends on specific cases ( Happy Bday Ate A and Gabrielle (counting that you'll be a Feb. baby, people born this month are the best!), but mostly generic we should celebrate the best day of all, Women's Day, on March 1st! Why the best? Because it's well known they always bring the best ( or worst ) in us ( but for this specific occasion we shall assume it's the best! ), and as such I have researched deep inside my endless bucket of inspiration for an appropriate gift. Not having found one and considering that flowers are overrated, I shall give you the best gift of all: the gift of knowledge, as I shall bake the best cake ever, using an old filipino recipe and my best unique ideas for an astonishing end result that I shall eat all alone while you cheer Sarap, Sarap ! Yes, as you already figured it out from t...

BOPIS

BOPIS Dear Santa, This end of the year I wish you make all poor people rich, all unhappy people joyful and give all lonely persons lots of good friends. Also I have some other requests but I don't want to go all political. I'll just mention that this world deserves more good and if Santa delivers more than just physical gifts, well, that would make a big difference. But we are all stuck in our own problems, with our own small or big issues and we often forget that each of us could be better. No worries though, let's just all hope that Santa is the man and he'll solve all global problems. I mean he has an army of elves and he can move at light speed with an all you can carry wagon thingy, that should be enough to solve some issues I think. Specially considering he's directly affected by the global warming .That, of course, unless he probably plans to have his house on a beach soon instead of  the Pole. But what does he care, he just goes around giving lumps of ...

PINAUPONG MANOK

Pinaupong Manok This week I have decided to eat healthy and I was going to prepare a salad. But then, the government issued a warning regarding romaine lettuce in North America, so good timing, I get to postpone again! Wait, but isn't there that time of the year here when people are grateful for all the good things in their life ( president, climate change, the stocks going up  etc) ? Yes it is, at least for our friendly neighbors, cause in Canada we already got to celebrate with bacon and maple syrup ( before weed was legalized) last month. So there are two options for today's plans: fight an old lady at the store for that black friday discounted power backup generator or stay home and pretend you celebrate with your imaginary friends and family while eating your carefully prepared turkey. While both options are equally pleasing, I have settled on the last one , and under the careful video guidance of R I have started preparing the greatest thanksgiving meal ever, filipi...

BEEF NILAGA

BEEF NILAGA Good morning everyone (or two), this week is that first time of the year when it snows in Canada and temperature below 0 becomes a given. Which, of course, triggers the need to get a flu shot and some hot soup! Because what's winter and cold without a cool hot soup. Or, that's just how I try to justify the fact that R thinks me cooking super easy recipes will exponentially increase the chances of getting the end result right. Well, think again! Anyway, just because the recipe is boring doesn't mean the ingredients are too. This being said, without further ado, let me introduce to you the stars of the show: - coming from the far isles of the Middle Earth kingdom, surrounded in darkens and black magic, I present to you , the Pink Potato! Its powers are ancient but they say it can turn to black if cut and left alone on a plate!.. or even produce thunders and electricity if covered in copper and zinc armor! The legend says, during the Great Wild Fire, ever...

GINATAANG GULAY

Ginataang Gulay Good morning fellow weekend kitchen warriors, it is that time of the week again where we go hunting for Filipino's favorite vegetable, pork. Kidding, coconut! Well, fruit, whatever. Today recipe will include lots of coconut milk ( because it's rich, flavored, nutritious and delicious) and pumpkin because Halloween just went by and the Starbucks spicy pumpkin latte is not exactly what you'd eat for dinner. Also, considering my recent visit to the dentist, boiled vegetables would be of great use, as pizza crust is definitely a no for my gums at the moment. That being said , yes, we get old and not necessarily wiser, and teeth problems come along with our numerous life accomplishments. But let's cut to the coconut cause I know your time is precious and you might probably be hungry by now: Ginataang Gulay ! What you'll need is a small and cute pumpkin/squash ( as we didn't find the so called jackfruit the recipe calls for). Take a picture of ...

TUNA SISIG

Tuna Sisig Dear diary. What is love? No, not the song, the feeling. According to an old magician scroll from Essex recently auctioned, If you want to make a woman fall in love with you, make her a nice broth made with pig bones. “Write her name on parchment and throw into the fire on which you cook a broth of herbs mixed with pig bones and share with the lady”. Apparently saying the words ‘ala aymala’ also help in case you want her to strip dance for you in the process. Anyway, as it seems, everyone defines love according to their specific needs and interests at the moment but somehow it always goes back to the food, or as we know " love goes through the stomach". That being said, I thought today of trying something easy and quick to prepare, just for the lonely late hours working people that need some love in their life: Sisig. Normally, sisig is a filipino dish prepared using pig face as ingredient ( yuuuuuk!!) but since that sounds (not) extremely romantic and you would...

TORTANG GINILING

TORTANG GINILING (Meat Omelet) Halo halo everyone and what's up duude! As you know , last week Canada officially traded the maple leaf to it's shape resembling greener cousin you can also smoke, so we're on the way of becoming more eco friendly soon. This made me think I need to include more vegetables in my diet as per R's recommendation of becoming hotter at least since rich is not an option ( yet ). That's why I took a long look in my fridge and reflected on the past , present and future of the world as we know it, and computed that since i'm a bit lazy I shall chose a mix of my favorite ingredients in the world, eggs ( potatoes are still sharing the podium but not today. And yes, they are vegetables). Alright, so looking at the super short list of available components and seeing the word mix written in front... mix of ..eggs.. it give me the greatest idea ever: we shall cook an omelette! Nope, not du fromage, but as a quick google on filipino egg recipes...

PANCIT CANTON

PANCIT CANTON Alright kids, let me tell you a story. There was once, long time ago, when crabs could fly and probably R wasn't allergic to shellfish, in an ancient and mysterious asian island lost between 1000 others,a young girl named Xit Pan. She was super pretty and her smile always cheered everyone, and also liked rice pasta a lot, therefore each morning she was going out in her rice field and she sang to the young plants with her angelic voice. Yes, Pan Xit can tune alright! One day, after her morning ritual, she went for a pina colada and a long walk on the beach when she spotted a young fisherman in his boat near the shore. The boat was half full of provisions as he looked like he was lost at sea.  Xit Pan introduced herself: "Pan Xit!" and pointed towards the boat. The fisherman didn't understand her language though and thought she was referring to his provisions. "Canned tuna!" he said. Anyway, long story short, she took him home and they got ma...
